Product Introduction

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Bisabolol (α-Bisabolol) is a natural sesquiterpene alcohol. As a core ingredient in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and personal care products, it exhibits anti-inflammatory, soothing, antibacterial properties and unique aromatic characteristics. Its natural sources mainly come from plants such as chamomile and myrrh, but can also be produced through microbial fermentation or chemical synthesis. It is divided into α-type and β-type. The α-type is the mainstream active form, while the β-type has weaker activity. In industry, the α-type is the core. It is mainly used in the fields of cosmetics, personal care products, and medicine.

Chamomile was first used in ancient Egypt, ancient Rome, ancient Greece, as well as medieval Europe and South America to heal war wounds, treat skin infections and inflammations, and was also used as incense in religious rituals and as a medicinal ointment. α-Bisabolol was first discovered in German chamomile essential oil in 1877, and its chemical structure and properties were identified by German chemists in 1909. In the 1960s, it was purified into a raw material and applied in high-end cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. However, its large-scale application was restricted by high costs and low extraction yields. In the 1990s, with the maturity of chemical synthesis technology, industrial production was realized via the epoxidation-rearrangement-hydrogenation route using citral, isoprene and methylheptenone as starting materials. The product achieved a purity of over 98%, and its cost dropped to 20% of that of natural extraction, becoming the market mainstream.

In China, α-Bisabolol was mainly imported from 1980 to 2005. After 2005, pharmaceutical enterprises in Jiangsu and Zhejiang developed chemical synthesis processes, enabling mass production, drastically reducing costs and gradually replacing imports. By 2010, China's production capacity reached 300 tons per year, accounting for 30% of the global supply, and has maintained an annual growth rate of 5%-7%.​​​​​​​

In 2022, with the leaping development of synthetic biotechnology, engineered strains constructed by genetic engineering and metabolic engineering methods enabled the fermentation production of α-Bisabolol using glucose as the substrate. Subsequent physical purification yields α-Bisabolol with a content exceeding 95%.​​​​​​​
